Today’s poem is inspired by Memorial day, and tells of a husband who has lost his wife in the service and how he struggles to find meaning after her passing. Today’s poem was inspired by the following 11 random words (in blue) from my twitter followers:

@damien_riley (uncharted), @Java4Two (Love), @R_Arblaster (remembering), @dodd4god (nifty), @anefallarme (drained), @Zorlone (insurmountable), @superwoman579 (guffaw), @conradtheart (miserable), @Owl311 (surreptitious), @ambassador1O1 (molecule), @SusanBerland (patience)

Strength of Loss

Unfold this map and you will see
Uncharted lands there will be

Love found strength when none existed
Even when lives were strained and twisted

Four years gone and my flame still burns
Her love, her time, my heart still yearns

Remembering the insurmountable odds against us
Every time I watched you climb back on that bus

I prayed each day to find you home alive
Drained and worried, just begging you’ll survive

The news came, that you were never coming back
The shuddering sound as my heart just crack

Nifty memories of you, scattered on my kitchen table
All to be told now, as it were, but a miserable fable

Every molecule of patience being tested
My trust, emotions and life simply arrested

Unexpected hope and support from abroad
At first not believing, suspecting a fraud

Slowly through time and the help of others
Leaning on people, not just my friends but brothers

A surreptitious guffaw swept over me some time later
I had buried my pain and moved past being a hater

Now I honor this woman for the rest of my days
For her strength and courage in my own personal ways
