Kitten Hunts

A radish garden in Iona, where plant and dirt align
beetles no bigger than pistachios crawl, to nature’s grand design

Reflections in the eyes of an eager hunting kitten
mystery of finch and bug, looking to get bitten

Each X-factor critter more intriguing than the rest
worth a follow for a while, until he comes upon the nest

A shadows eclipse as he begins the silent crawl
fire of a frugal chase that risks ending in a sprawl

Shillelagh paws reaching for their tiny mark
a feline hunter, as deadly as a shark

Swooping in with shrieking calls and feathers flash
the startled kitty makes a splash

Defeated this time with wounded pride
he runs, to find a place to hide

Bug In A Tank

This is my bug in the tank
Which I have my dad to thank

He caught it for me
Found it in a tree

It can be called a grasshopper
but really locust is more proper

It jumps up in the air so high
I hope that away it won’t fly

It eats sticks and leaves so green
I keep the tank all nice and clean

Speckled yellow with brown spots
Even having some white dots

Finding him was good luck
But momma thinks bugs are yuck
