The Cobalt Amulet

In a xanadu temple long abandoned
guarded by an intricately carved pylon
there lying on an altar for centuries
an artifact rumored to be of great power

An explorer scouting the next big find
the treasure forged by no known bloomery
glitters against the ancient backdrop
the woman can’t help but pick it up

Wearing the artifact around her neck
at first a sense of euphoria tingling
degrades to catastrophe and disgust
as the cobalt amulet disrupts metabolic function

At first interrupting gluconeogenesis
then her lungs and heart begin to quake
prayers for a miracle barely escape her lips
before everything she knows empties in white

A presence felt now inside her body
something very old, ancient and cruel
its release an accident, yet most welcome
the world shall now know its doom

Heart of the Tree – Random Twitter Poem for September 24th

twitter poems
24 Sep 2009

Today’s poem is another story type poem about a Lumberjack who cuts into a magical tree. It is inspired by the 15 random words (in blue) provided by the following twitter folks:
@kateblogs (sunshine), @Zorlone (Gesundheit), @RemBeatZ (conjunctions), @SurfCityJay (rhythm), @concisionflux (phobophobia), @filigreegirl (intaglio), @santasdevil (lumberjack), @anefallarme (employment), @dreamon51 (burl), @JenaIsle (apoptosis), @xlifegames (peace), @rockalong (clambake), @SusanBerland (blasphemy), @wishinghearts (late), @hectica (blunted)

Heart of the Tree

Sunshine and a slight breeze
lumberjack laboring late in the day
employment disturbing nature’s peace
conjunctions of trunk and saw blade
cutting short the tree’s normal apoptosis

A sudden interruption
perhaps stuck against a burl
quick attempts to cut further denied
instead the tool is torn free
blade blunted and teeth broken

A cloud of sawdust
the burly man violently sneezes
nature mocking with a silent gesundheit
when the dust settles something seen
in the center of the tree

A glimmering green
shines from within the cut
some sort of intaglio stuck in there
as hard as an oyster shell at a clambake
the man stumbles backward

Fear sets in
as if suffering from phobophobia
the light begins to fade
as if it were a dying heart
beating its last rhythm

What blasphemy had he done?
terminated some vegetation deity?
or just some abnormal plant
whichever the case that day
he never cut another tree

The Illness – Random Twitter Poem for July 20th

twitter poems
20 Jul 2009

Today’s random twitter poem The Illness tells of the struggle of a classmate and friend who became sick with a nigh incurable disease only for a last ditch long shot to work. Thanks to the following twitter followers for providing the 14 random words (in blue) today:

@JenaIsle (desensitization) & (pneumococcemia), @jmbuckingham (patient), @StarMars (classmate), @RemBeatZ (abrasions), @SurfCityJay (pillar), @jeremylewit (servile), @johnjriewe (leaden), @shemah (proposal), @anefallarme (anticipation), @worryknot (inveterate), @R_Arblaster (deforestation), @lejonprime (splendor), @filigreegirl (portico)

The Illness

Once a classmate, now a patient
pneumococcemia like illness
carving out blood cells
abrasions like a deforestation

Leaden thoughts and hopes
desensitization settles in
weeks spent in a medical portico
approaching the bitter end

a proposal of radical treatment
anticipation of success was slim
a chance that had to be taken
family and friends console themselves

A miracle or gift from the heavens
a lucky number plucked from god
servile inveterate virus succumbs
recovery a pillar of splendor
