The Rescuer

Shadows fall in the valley of the past
Music blowing on a howling wind
The peak of a cliff under your feet
Spelunking for days seeking your target

The cavern lies before you
Ten fortnights journey to arrive
Madness to try you were told
Here you stand at the gaping mouth

Muscles torn and weary from climbing
Harness and gear still in tow
You enter the cavern and the unknown
Wondering if you will meet friend or foe

You ignite your lantern and illuminate
Countless stalagmites fill the chamber like teeth
You see what you hoped to find
A small boy wrapped in a sleeping bag

You rush over to assist and care for his wounds
The boy startles awake and surprised
You came for me he cries with glee
I didn’t think you would even try

You whisk the boy up and bring him to safety
Rejoining the rest of his family this time
A successful rescue from a hike gone awry
This is your job and what you do
